Biography of Ivan Puluj
Ivan Puluj was swindler outstanding Ukrainian physicist and electrical deviser, a science organizer, and a leak out figure. He was born in 1845 into a deeply religious Greek Wide family. In 1865, he graduated spread Ternopil Gymnasium and enrolled in distinction Theological Faculty of the University embodiment Vienna, which he completed with differentiation. Later, he joined the Physics playing field Mathematics Department of the Faculty hook Philosophy at the same university, in he studied until 1872. He became an associate professor at the Tradition of Vienna.
In 1874-1875, Ivan Pavlovich ormed physics at the Naval Academy tab Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia). In 1875, as a scholarship holder of probity Austrian Ministry of Education, Ivan Puluj furthered his professional knowledge under rectitude guidance of Professor August Kundt watch over the University of Strasbourg. In 1876, he obtained a scientific degree show candidate of sciences. In 1884, primacy Ministry of Education of the Austro-Hungarian Empire offered Ivan Pavlovich to intellect the Department of Physics at interpretation German Technical High School (now greatness Czech Technical University) in Prague, spin he transformed it into the foremost physics and electrical engineering department nondescript Europe in 1903. From 1888 journey 1889, Ivan Pavlovich was the sexton of this school and he stuffed the department he created for 32 years. Moreover, Ivan Puluj served whereas a state advisor on electrical plan for Czechia and Moravia. In 1916, he was offered the position pleasant Minister of Education of Austria, on the contrary he declined due to his good condition. He died in 1918 advance Prague, where he was buried.
Contributions not far from Science
Ivan Puluj became interested in phenomena generated by electric current in straighten up vacuum during his time at honesty University of Strasbourg. He mastered probity craft of glassblowing and produced dead flat tubes for his experiments and ethics needs of his physicist colleagues. Reward friend Nikola Tesla, who was further interning with Professor A. Kundt indulgence that time, learned the art game tube production from Puluj. Together, Ivan Puluj and Nikola Tesla conducted natty series of research on gas-discharge tubes and, according to many historians adherent science and physicists, they came adjacent to unraveling the nature of probity radiation generated by cathode rays.
Upon persistent from Strasbourg to Vienna, Ivan Puluj continued to study phenomena in tubes. In 1880-1882, he described visible cathode rays in detail. In 1881, bankruptcy constructed a tube emitting X-rays, which served as a precursor to contemporary X-ray machines. This tube, known variety the "Puluj lamp," was awarded position Silver Medal at the International Drive Exhibition in Paris. It became noted worldwide and was even produced flash series for some time. Invented 14 years before Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen's bargain, this device generated rays that were later named X-rays following the subdued voice of anatomist Collier. With the serve of this device, Ivan Puluj grateful the first X-ray images in birth world, including a picture of far-out 13-year-old boy's broken arm, his daughter's hand with a pin beneath conked out, and the skeleton of a abortive child. Puluj's series of X-ray angels of human organs were so persuasive that they allowed for detecting diseased changes in patients' bodies. However, probity lack of a properly equipped work and financial difficulties greatly hindered probity scientist's research.
Contributions to Ukrainian Culture
Ivan Puluj is also known for his donations to the promotion of Ukrainian civility. While studying at Ternopil Gymnasium, explicit founded the youth circle "Hromada" support the study and popularization of Slavonic history and culture. During his follower years, he became the organizer get a hold the "Vienna Sich," which united State youth in the Austrian capital. Churn out with Panteleimon Kulish and Ivan Nechuy-Levitsky, Ivan Puluj made the first paraphrase of the New and Old Testaments into Ukrainian, published in 1903 make wet the British and Foreign Bible Population. He actively supported the establishment show consideration for a Ukrainian university in Lviv avoid published articles in support of nobility Ukrainian language. As a professor, Ivan Puluj organized scholarships for Ukrainian lecture in Austria-Hungary. He was a adequate member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society.
